Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation in is perhaps the most popular plastic surgery procedure. In fact, over 400,000 breast augmentations are performed annually, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Board Certified Doctors Perrotta and Pellegrino have performed thousands of breast augmentation surgeries with a combined 35 years of experience in Plastic Surgery. They have created the area’s most comprehensive and state of the art plastic surgery complex. Click on Surgery Center to learn why our office is the most convenient, private and comfortable place to have your surgery.

You May Be a Candidate For Breast Augmentation If:

  • You feel your breasts are too small and you desire larger breasts.
  • You feel your breasts have lost volume following child bearing or weight loss.
  • You feel you have breast asymmetry (uneven breasts).
  • You have a mild case of breast ptosis (droopy breasts).

The Goals of Breast Augmentation:

  • Breasts that are in proportion with the rest of the body.
  • Breasts that are shapely and symmetrical.
  • Improvement in body contour.
  • More positive self-image.

Your Breast Augmentation Evaluation

Drs. Perrotta and Pellegrino will evaluate your breasts to help decide on the best approach to the procedure at their Maryland or Delaware based locations. Some breast augmentation candidates learn that they can achieve a satisfactory outcome with simply breast augmentation, others may also require a breast lift, and still others may find the both the breast augmentation and breast lift are required to fully improve the appearance of the breasts.

Once the doctor determines the surgical plan, you will meet with the aesthetic coordinator, who will continue to answer any of your questions, and will also provide you with a written quote, which clearly outlines all costs. Once the quote is signed, your pre-operative appointment and surgery date are scheduled.

Choosing your Implant

Implants come in a variety of shapes and sizes. There are two types that are used in breast augmentation procedures, saline and silicone.

While all breast implants have thin outer shells of solid silicone, they also contain inner filler material, which provides the volume. Saline implants refer to breast implants eventually filled with saline. Silicone gel implants are filled with silicone gel. Each type has its advantages over the other.

Breast Augmentation Surgery

Dr. Perrotta and Dr. Pellegrino routinely perform breast augmentations on an outpatient basis. Some patients prefer heavy IV sedation with local anesthesia while others require general anesthesia. Their patients have the luxury of having undergoing surgery in the most private and convenient of settings, the operating room suite located inside Peninsula Plastic Surgery’s Salisbury office complex. This operating room has the distinction of being fully accredited by AAAHC and certified by Medicare.

Doctors Perrotta and Pellegrino place their incisions inside or just above the inferior mammary creases (breast folds) or around the areolas. Both of these approaches provide excellent exposure for the surgeon and therefore increase the likelihood of perfect results. Some other surgeons place incisions inside the armpits or use the belly button as the site of entry. Unfortunately, the armpit and the belly button do not provide good exposure.

The surgeon then produces a pocket on each side of the chest to receive an implant. Both Doctors Pellegrino and Perrotta routinely form this pocket under the pectoralis major muscle, which makes for a more natural look and reduces the risk of capsular contracture. For an accentuated look, an occasional patient will request to have her pocket created above the muscle.

Doctors Pellegrino and Perrotta soak the implants in antibiotic solution, which reduces the risk of infection. Only thereafter do they insert them into the pockets. They then meticulously close the wounds in multiple layers of stitches.

The nursing staff then applies the dressings and post-op garment.

Post-Op Recovery

Patients go home with an elastic bra. The bra produces pressure to prevent bleeding, and provides support to reduce discomfort from the bouncy ride home.

Most patients experience pain for three days and then discomfort for two weeks thereafter. Oral narcotics adequately control such pain.

Both surgeons schedule patients for follow up visits within one week after surgery, two to three weeks after surgery, six to eight weeks after surgery and then annually. These visits are complimentary.

Longterm Monitoring

Both doctors monitor their patients closely. They offer complimentary annual check-ups during which the breasts are assessed for capsular contracture and migration of a breast implant.
Our doctors will order routine mammograms for our patients. Patients who have undergone breast augmentation surgery start obtaining mammograms at age thirty-five.
