Your Breast Reduction Evaluation:
Drs. Perrotta and Pellegrino will evaluate your breasts to help decide on the best approach to the procedure at their Maryland or Delaware based locations. Once the doctor determines the surgical plan, you will meet with the aesthetic coordinator, who will continue to answer any of your questions, and will also provide you with a written quote, which clearly outlines all costs. Once the quote is signed, your pre-operative appointment and surgery date are scheduled. While this procedure has been commonly covered by insurance, insurance criteria’s are becoming more and more restrictive. Our staff will assist you in attempting to attain pre-authorization for the surgery if you are eligible.
Breast Reduction Surgery:
Doctors Pellegrino and Perrotta are able to perform breast reduction surgery with general anesthesia, regional anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation. Most patients leave the surgery center or hospital on the day of surgery. Older patients or those with significant health risks stay overnight in the hospital and leave the following morning. The surgical techniques Doctors Pellegrino and Perrotta utilize do not only reduce the breasts, they also lift them.
The design of the incisions can vary but usually includes an incision around the nipple-areolar complex, one from the complex down to the crease under the breast and a third running along this crease. In some cases, the surgeon can utilize the vertical breast reduction technique and avoid the long scar running along this crease.Click here for more information on the Vertical Breast Reduction.
The nipple-areolar complex is moved upward to the desired location; excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are removed. Doctors Pellegrino and Perrotta oftentimes utilize drains which remove any fluid or blood that would otherwise accumulate under the skin after they close the wounds. The surgical team covers the incisions with gauze dressings and then applies a post-op garment or ace bandages.
In the recovery room, the nurses teach the patients and/or their caregivers how to care for the drains. Click here for more info on drain care. Initial discomfort subsides daily and can be controlled with oral narcotic medication. Most patients are off narcotic pain medication by post-op day five. Doctors Pellegrino and Perrotta like to see their patients 3-5 days after the procedures. There are usually two to three post-op visits thereafter. Most patients are able to return to desk work after two weeks and physical work after three. Some patients will experience diminished sensation of the nipples and/or parts of the breast. This is due to the dissection, and it usually improves with time. A significant percentage of patients experience will experience some limited wounding along the incisions, which is due to the body’s attempt to eliminate some of the deep stiches. These sores eventually heal, but such healing could take more than a month. Scars will usually fade in 6-12 months.
Following breast reduction surgery, a patient who bears a child and decides to breast feed should expect to produce breast milk of lesser volume than normal and of inferior quality. Most infants of these moms will also require some type of formula supplement.
Additional Procedures to Enhance Breast Reduction:
An additional procedure that would enhance the result is Liposuction of the axillary (arm pit) area to reduce excess fat deposits there.
